A Book of Me
A little bit of background:
Beauty and Utility Arts is a Leicestershire based Arts and Health social enterprise, developing and managing creative projects and products with social benefits. The organisation was founded and is run by Katherine Brown.
Focusing just on my home area of Hinckley for a moment, with the projected doubling in the number of people across Leicestershire developing a dementia in the period 2011 – 2030 (8,000 – 16,000) in Hinckley and Bosworth alone we will see, over the same period, numbers rising to 2,600.
To support every person, in the best way possible, health care services will need to expand and there will inevitably be more pressure on carers and healthcare professionals.
With so much going on, how do we make sure that every single person with a dementia receives the best possible care, for them, as an individual?
‘A Book of Me’ is designed to help that process.
- ‘A Book of Me’ will be designed with the individual in mind. It will be portable in size, have a front that can be personalised and contain sections to express what makes someone unique – their stories, memories, likes, dislikes and more.
- ‘A Book of Me’ will give links to relevant nationwide organisations providing services and information about dementia.
- ‘A Book of Me’ will be for each individual to keep and have a creative, friendly look and feel. It’s meant to be used as often as someone likes; added to, changed, shared with friends, family and professionals supporting with care.
- ‘A Book of Me’ will share stories from others about ‘living well with dementia’.
A prototype ‘A Book of Me’ specifically for the Borough of Hinckley and Bosworth was developed between 2012 and 2015 after wide ranging consultation with members of the public, people and carers living with a dementia and agencies working in this area of health. Copies were then tested and distributed for the Borough. Beauty and Utility Arts are thankful to the Hinckley and Bosworth Health and Wellbeing Partnership and Staying Healthy Community Grant allocation from Public Health, for their support on that stage.
It is now time for Beauty and Utility Arts to progress with a nationwide resource using a crowdfunding platform, and create a broader resource for the benefit of many, many more people. ‘A Book of Me’ will sit under our new trademark Our Memory Lanes ® and, with your support, be the beginning of a flow of creative resources with social benefits.
